If you want to experience the region around Schmallenberg in its authentic character, I particularly recommend the Golddorf Routes.

These circular hiking trails connect some of the most beautiful places in the Sauerland – small villages with well-maintained half-timbered houses, expansive meadows, and a landscape that feels almost untouched. Each route has its own rhythm: sometimes open and wide, sometimes quiet and surrounded by forest. Overall, the trails lead through multiple award-winning "Gold Villages," known for their distinctive village design.

What I particularly appreciate about these tours is the tranquility. You're on the go, but never in a hurry. There are always little moments – a bench by the wayside, a sweeping view over the hills, or simply the silence.
